Free Dysarthria and Aphasia Speech Therapy Suggestions to Talk Better

Speak in few words and
plainly

Here are some free dysarthria and aphasia speech therapy suggestions to talk better for family members and therapists.

The suggestion that speaking properly requires as few words as you can is a good one, especially for those who have recent strokes or are undergoing speech therapy for the first time.

Speaking in as few words as possible makes it easier for many people with aphasia, especially if they have help from a speech model who is a person who has learned how to help people talk with simple methods such as those learned in the Teaching of Talking.  The trouble with many family members and therapists is that they make it too difficult and demand too much, rather than requesting simple words and word combinations.  So remember to speak and stimulate as few words as possible at first.  When those with aphasia and dysarthria have tasks that are easy, their confidence increases with success on simple speaking tasks in few words.

2nd Suggestion:  Speak Plainly to Be Understood:  Speak Slowly

Another one of the principles of expert speech and language stimulation and The Teaching of Talking Method is to always find a way for the person with aphasia, dysarthria or apraxia to speak plainly.  Speech must be clear to be understood, and many with aphasia do not realize they must speak very slowly.  Slower speeds may also improve articulation since the individual has more time to plan and move his articulators.

Many with neurological speech problems can no longer move the tongue lips and teeth as fast as they had before the trauma.  However, often if the speech rate is slowed way down, the person can make those movements more accurately which contributes to speaking clearly and being understood.
