Finding the Right Therapist
How Will I Know?
There are varying degrees of therapy for people with aphasia. They are:
- Token Therapy where someone might be seen 1x a week for aphasia or seen in a group.
- Take it or Leave it Therapy: Twice a week therapy with a student or inexperienced clinician.
- Great Therapy: You have a therapist who is an expert and where you see results each time therapy is provided.

Therapist and wife help Her Husband Talk |
You will know when you find the right therapist.
He or she will be:
- courteous
- caring
- capable
- will teach you what to do
- will involve you in the therapy
- will be considerate
- will show results right away
There are many families who do not see much of any progress in speech therapy What to Do if you are in this situation:
- consider getting another opinion when there are minimal results
- when you question the methods of therapy such as computer or iPads, instead of directly working 1:1 with the person who has aphasia.
- when family members are not trained or involved directly by the therapists to use methods at home.
- The therapy room is where not only the client gets therapy, but the family member also receives instruction.
- In this time there is less and less care being provided by insurance plans.
