Learn speech therapy methods for dysarthria to speak better at home
Learn to help your loved one
speak better

You can learn to help your loved one or client with dysarthria speak better at home.

Research shows us that those family members who take the time to learn how to help those with dysarthria and aphasia speak better and get comparable and even better results than those who go to speech therapy for 45 min to an hour a couple of times per week.  Imagine all the time it takes to get ready to go to therapy, the commute, the wait, and who knows the skill level of the therapist you will see.

When you take the time to learn how to help others with dysarthria speak clearly at home you have literally hours of extra time to just speak to  him/her with methods that a speech language pathologist with 44 years of experience developed while working with those who have dysarthria, brain injury, aphasia, and apraxia.

Learning to talk or speak better is something all of us learned or can learn at home

When babies learn to walk they take one step at a time.

When babies learn to talk they speak one word at a time.

Once baby is familiar with the vocabulary it starts saying that word to get things.

Soon the baby learns to put words together to want more or to give more information

This process continues and with more time the baby is saying more words, phrases and sentences

For most children speech is naturally clear and distinct.

That's Not The Case For Those with Acquired Dysarthria

An acquired dysarthria is where there is a brain injury or trauma and it affects the melody and rhythm of speaking.  Often it is slurred as if the person had one to many coctails.  Often people with dysarthria think they are speaking clearly when they are not.  Once the acquired dysarthria develops it must be changed so that the person can speak in a way people understand.

So What must we do to help the person with Dysarthria Speak Clearly at Home?

  1. To speak clearly those with dysarthria must be motivated to speak with clarity.
  2. It is most helpful for family members to learn what to do, or how to speak to the person with dysarthria.
  3. Family members must speak to the person with dysarthria very slowly with a rest between each spoken word.  This must be done every day, week, month and year until mastered.
  4. Loved one must realize that changing the way to speak is something that is counter intuitive.  It's just not natural!
  5. Once family members learn how to speak to those with dysarthria, it becomes a mutual goal of speaking clearnly for those with dysarthria and their families.
  6. The Teaching of Talking Method will give you the sequence, or the steps to mastering dysarthria.
  7. The Teaching of Talking Method for Dysarthria involves familiy members learning to speak like they want their loved ones with dysarthria.
  8. We speak like those we spend time with.  We learn to speak in a new way to each other.
